MSOE’s business acumen tested

MSOE’s business acumen tested

     Milwaukee School of Engineering students won first place in three events and finished in second or third place in seven other categories at the 43rd annual Wisconsin Future Business Leaders of America / Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA/PBL) Conference held April 16-17 in Sheboygan, Wis.

     The state conference and competitions served as a qualifying round for the FBLA/PBL National Conference, to be held July 9-12, 2010, in Nashville, Tenn. By virtue of placing first or second in their events, nine of the 11 MSOE students attending the Sheboygan conference qualified for the national competitions this summer.  Students earning third place awards are considered national competition alternates.

     This year's event marked MSOE Rader School of Business' fourth year of competition. Competitions included both written examinations and judged demonstrations in business and information technology subjects.  The following students qualified to compete at the FBLA/PBL National Conference:

First Place Awards
Digital Video Production (team event):
Jake Larson (MIS), Maple Grove, Minn.; Anica Rutz (IB), Woltersdorf, Germany; and Jasmine Stiens (IB), Lüebeck, Germany
Human Resource Management (team event):  Anica Rutz (IB), Woltersdorf, Germany; and Eva-Maria Austermann (IB), Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany
Word Processing:  Sara Vanderlin (ME), Fond du Lac, Wis.

Second Place Awards
Business Ethics (team event):  Jake Larson (MIS), Maple Grove, Minn.; Henry Luecht (IB), Cyrstal Lake, Ill.; and Steve Luecht (BM), Crystal Lake, Ill.
International Business:  Garrick Jannene (IB), Janesville, Wis.
Marketing Concepts:  Patrick Donlan (SE), Hillsboro, Wis.
Project Management:  Sara Vanderlin (ME), Fond du Lac, Wis.
Statistical Analysis:  Eva-Maria Austermann (IB), Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany

     More than 120 college students attended this year's conference and competitions. The 10 students representing MSOE are members of the university's Phi Beta Lambda Chapter, a student organization open to all MSOE majors. Several Midwest business schools were represented at the state conference including UW-Madison, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Whitewater, UW-Green Bay and University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. The Rader School of Business and MBLA have been affiliated with Future Business Leaders of America / Phi Beta Lambda since 2006. Dr. Michael Payne, assistant professor, is the group's advisor.
